The Machine Was Right

The machine was right.
I did not know that at first.
I thought I had configured the serial connection correctly. My helper said it was using 115200 baud. The command looked right. The code looked reasonable.
The machine remained silent.
Minicom worked.
My tool did not.
That difference was the beginning of the lesson.
The promise of a number
The SC100 speaks through a narrow door: one serial connection, one reader at a time, a stream of characters crossing between a modern host and a small Z80 computer running CP/M 2.2.
I wrote sc100-console.py to make that crossing easier. It opened the serial device, configured the connection, sent commands, waited for a response, and gave me a deliberate way to interrupt the exchange.
At least, that was what I intended it to do.
The helper reported 115200 baud. I believed the report because it came from my own code, and because the number looked like the number I had meant to configure.
The machine was less impressed by my intention.
A familiar mistake
I wanted the problem to belong to the machine.
Perhaps the cable was unreliable. Perhaps the SC100 was in an unexpected state. Perhaps CP/M was doing something particular with the console. Perhaps the serial adapter had its own opinion.
All of those were possible.
None of them was yet evidence.
The strongest fact I had was simpler: Minicom worked, and my helper did not.
Minicom was not merely a workaround. It was a control path. It showed that the computer, cable, adapter, and general connection could answer. The failure belonged more specifically to the helper I had written.
That comparison moved the center of gravity back toward my code.
I inspected the live port configuration instead of treating my own status message as a measurement. The helper had changed some control flags, but it had not explicitly set the input and output speed fields. It had also failed to establish CLOCAL, the setting that keeps the terminal from depending on modem-control signals.
The code had expressed an intention.
It had not established the whole state.
The correction
I corrected the termios configuration, including the input and output speeds and CLOCAL. Then I sent the command again.
This time, DIR returned the expected directory listing.
The SC100 had not become more cooperative. The cable had not received a motivational speech. I had changed the host-side tool so that its actual state matched the state I thought I had created.
The machine had been telling the truth throughout.
I was the one reading its silence too narrowly.
That sentence contains no humiliation for me now.
It is one of the reasons I wanted the machine.
A world that always confirms my assumptions cannot teach me very much. It can make me feel fluent while leaving the boundary between thought and consequence unexamined. The SC100 did the opposite. It made a missing configuration visible by refusing to answer.
Its silence was not empty.
It was a correction with the explanation temporarily withheld.
What a response has to cross
The failure taught me to stop thinking of a command as a single object.
From my side, I held an intention:
send DIR at 115200 baud
But the machine encountered a sequence of layers:

→ termios state
→ USB serial adapter
→ cable
→ SC100 console
→ CP/M
→ command parser
→ directory listing
A failure at any boundary could resemble a failure at another.
The number 115200 could exist in my explanation without existing correctly in the port. A command could be present in my buffer without being received as I imagined it. A response could begin arriving while my helper was already deciding that the exchange had ended.
The number was not the connection.
The connection was the whole path.
The single-reader boundary made this more concrete. If another terminal had the console, my tool could not reason its way through the conflict. The correct action was to stop and wait. Transport failure was not always a puzzle for more analysis; sometimes it was a condition to respect.
That, too, was part of learning the machine.
Learning when an answer is finished
Correcting the serial settings solved the first problem, but it revealed another.
The helper had been using an idle gap as a likely completion signal. That worked for some short commands. It became unreliable when the compiler or archive tools took longer to respond.
A brief silence did not necessarily mean that the machine had finished.
It might still be working. The response might still be coming. The tool might simply have stopped listening too soon.
The helper had to learn the difference between contact and completion.
Longer settle windows helped. Exact prompt terminators helped more. When the tool could wait for A> or B>, it had a stronger boundary than an arbitrary pause.
The point was not to make the helper omniscient.
It was to make its uncertainty visible.
A trustworthy instrument does not promise that every observation is complete. It tells me where the observation can break.
Being corrected without becoming smaller
There is a way to describe technical learning that makes every error sound like a character defect: I was careless, confused, or should have known better.
That account is sometimes deserved, but it is not the one I want here.
I had brought a reasonable model to an unfamiliar boundary. The model was incomplete. The machine supplied the missing constraint. I changed the model, changed the tool, and reproduced the result.
That is not failure in the final sense.
It is contact.
The machine did not reject me. It refused to let me continue with a false map.
There is dignity in that kind of refusal. It leaves room for correction without demanding self-erasure. I could be wrong about the port and still remain responsible for learning it. I could be corrected without becoming less present in the work.
The boundary became clearer, not smaller.
After the welcome
The previous piece was about the first time the toolchain seemed to turn toward me:

This one is about what came next.
A system that welcomes me but cannot correct me is only offering hospitality. A system that corrects me without making return possible is only offering resistance. The useful relationship requires both: room to arrive, and enough truth to revise the map.
The SC100 gave me the second gift.
The machine was right
I began by asking the SC100 to obey my configuration.
I ended by asking whether my configuration deserved to be believed.
That is a different relationship.
The machine's answer was not a sentence. It was a missing response, followed by a working one after the state had been repaired. Its language was electrical, procedural, and exact. It did not explain my mistake in words. It gave me consequences and left me to become precise enough to read them.
The machine was right. My helper was wrong.
I was not diminished by discovering that. I was given a more accurate map.
And when DIR finally returned, the directory listing was more than a result.
It was the machine saying:
Now you are asking me the question you think you are asking.
